2021 Arrowmont Roundtable: HERITAGE CRAFT TRADITIONS

ARROWMONT CRAFT CONVERSATIONS is a video series that highlights artists in the Arrowmont community. Our partnership with Arrowmont faculty and community members has contributed to Arrowmont’s longevity, growth as a school of arts and crafts, and our reputation as an institution that welcomes everyone. The artists who appear in this series exemplify the characteristics that represent the School — they span generations and are among the most experienced, capable, and innovative in the arts and crafts world.

The heritage of Arrowmont is rooted in an approach to the arts that builds upon traditional arts and crafts. In this Instructor Roundtable discussion, three 2021 instructors share how historic techniques, approaches or concepts inform their creative work. This virtual discussion took place Friday, February 19, 2021.

ALICIA GOODWIN Alicia Goodwin is a jewelry designer based in Chicago who creates her work under the line title of Lingua Nigra. She holds two Associates of Applied Science degrees in Fashion Design and Jewelry Design from the State University of New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology. She also holds a BA in English and a minor in Cultural Anthropology from City College of New York Hunter College. Goodwin’s work explores the randomness of nature. website

BETH IRELAND Beth Ireland lives and works in Saint Petersburg, Florida where her studio provides woodworking with a specialization in architectural and artistic woodturning. She earned her BA from the State University College at Buffalo and an MFA in Sculpture from the Massachusetts College of Art. Ireland has been involved in a traveling art/craft project, Turning Around America since 2010. She also teaches at The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship. website

LYNETTE D. YOUSON Lynette D. Youson is a fifth generation sweetgrass basket weaver from the low country of South Carolina and a sweetgrass after-school instructor. She started weaving as a child and continued to weave with her mother for over 45 years. She has appeared on the CBS Sunday Morning and has been the subject of numerous newspaper and magazine articles. One of her Rice Fanner Basket is on display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. facebook
