Adult Craft Night Workshops

Jan 17 · Handmade Chopsticks · Heather Ashworth

Love eating with chopsticks? Want to own your very own handmade set? Students in this one night class will learn to hand plane two sets of chopsticks to enjoy delicious meals with. Some design elements will be discussed during class to make your chopsticks unique, and all sets will be finished with food safe finish.

Jan 17 · Hand Built Sweater Mug and Saucer · Marissa Childers

Make a cozy sweater mug in this workshop! This class will focus on hand-building with soft slabs. Students will roll slabs onto a variety of sweater textures and learn simple construction methods using a template. After students complete their mugs, they will create a saucer to match! Open to all skill levels.

Jan 17 · Textured and Colorful Highland Cows · Brianna Carroll

This class will give you all the skills and guidance needed to paint your very own trendy Highland cow. These cows have long hair with lots of personality that you can let shine through your painting, ensuring that no two look exactly alike! By the end of the evening, your cow will look as if it is poking through a wood frame and wanting to step through the canvas. There will be an option to add a textured medium to your paint for an additional touch.

Mandalas are a wonderful way to meditate and reduce stress. In this one night workshop, join us as we learn techniques and skills needed to paint with watercolors and add ink patterns to create on-of-a-kind mandala notecards.

Jan 17 · Needle Felting 101 · Katie Wagner

Students will learn the process of needle felting by building shapes and forms out of wool. Information on how wool fiber is processed and how fibers are blended together to create different textures and colors will be covered. Students will learn all the skills needed to create a custom small felted bird of their choice in class.

Feb 7 · Foraged Matrix: Screenprinting Unique Compositions · Ashlee Mays & Logan Szymanowski

Join directors of the Museum of Infinite Outcomes, and explore the living world through the matrix of screenprinting. Class will kick off with a hands on screenprinting demonstration with foraged Appalachian flora. This is a beginner level course, no drawing or printing experience required. We will work through multiple screens to create unique compositions and explore multiple colors building up layers while working collectively. Students will leave with 10 unique prints on paper.

Feb 7 · Bottles: Stopping and Opening · Mitch Jones

Learn how to make a bottle stopper and bottle opener in this one night class. We will cover all the skills needed and how to attach hardware, all while covering basic lathe safety and techniques. I'll make the demonstration quick so we can get to the charcuterie!

Feb 7 · Clay Jewelry Holders · Lisa Kurtz

Need somewhere to store all those wonderful jewelry items? In this class, students will make clay jewelry holders using pinch and slab techniques. All the skills needed to complete your holders will be covered so that you leave class with a unique piece of functional art.

Feb 7 · In the Box · Heather F. Wetzel

Participants in this one-day workshop will learn the basics of box making in the book arts. Topics such as grain direction, appropriate covering materials for different aspects of the box, embedding, magnets for enclosures, and principles behind measurements will all be covered. We will make a lidded box suitable for holding small treasures or prized possessions. While this first box will be made with specific dimensions suitable to store items such as your pencils and pens, you will walk away with the knowledge to make boxes of different dimensions. Necessary tools, adhesive, boards, and a selection of decorative paper will be provided.

Feb 10 · Naturalist Bookmaking · Ashlee Mays & Logan Szymanowski

Join the directors of the Museum of Infinite Outcomes for an afternoon of bookmaking and note-taking! Both art and science can be used as tools for getting to know the living world. Learn how to make your own exposed-spine journal and practice taking notes en-plein-air. Open to all skill levels, moderate hand dexterity needed for book-binding.

Feb 10 · Encaustic Collage · Kelly Sullivan

Spend the day at Arrowmont learning to create layered collages with encaustic medium, paper, and other media! We will start the day learning about collage and do some quick exercises to loosen up and then jump into papers, pigments, and so much more to make our piece. Each student will be working on a 10x10 cradled panel and will learn about different papers, encaustic paints, pigment sticks, alcohol inks and pan pastels and how they work with encaustic medium.

Feb 10 · Art For The Inner Child · Erin Achauer

In this class, students will be encouraged to unwind and embrace their inner child as they create a collaged painting! We will start by experimenting with techniques such as paint pouring and finger painting to create a fun, abstracted plane to add collage elements to. The mediums they will work with include acrylic paints, oil pastels, iridescent glitter medium, gloss pouring medium, and more.

Feb 10 · Fold Formed Jewelry · Lynn Straka

By using fire and hammers, we will bend and manipulate copper to create several pieces of jewelry. Fold forming creates texture and dimension to your jewelry pieces. By using this technique, we will create a simple leaf pendant, small geometric earrings and/or other fold formed pendant. We will also uses patinas to antique, and heat to add color to the metal.

Feb 10 · Wild Pigments: Make Your Own Watercolor, Acrylic, and Oil Paint · M Kobe

Have you ever made your own paint? Come learn the basics of earth pigment collecting and the simple steps to turn it into paint! Students will make their own watercolor, acrylic, and oil paint sets using four different earth pigments. Together we will discuss the history of pigment collection, the different locations these pigments come from (including our own backyards!), and different binding techniques turning these wild colors into beautiful paint.

Feb 23 · Oil and Cold Wax Abstract Painting · Michelle Barillaro

Students will learn how to use oil paint, cold wax, pigment sticks, charcoal, and pastels in this workshop. Each student will work on a 12x12" cradle panel to learn the skills and techniques needed to create their very own painting. We will look at samples of finished paintings, and talk about composition and color to give your piece of art a balanced finish.

Feb 23 · Novelty Candles & Scented Vessels · Amy Overbeck

Students will select a novelty candle option and learn how to de-mold your candle! Techniques and skills for how to prep your candle for completion will be covered. You will have the option of using wax, paint or both to color your candles and then glaze your candle for a shiny finish. While your candle dries, you’ll wick & re-pour the mold while also creating a 2-wick & 1 -8oz scented candle.

Feb 23 · Earrings Are Like Onions, They Have Many Layers · Lynn Straka

Using mixed metals and beads, students will layer pairs of earrings to share or keep to yourself. We will be using copper, brass, and various metals from the studio scrap bin to cut, texture, and bend shapes to layer and create your earrings. Techniques that we will be focusing on will be hand tool use, wire forging and forming, riveting, and using the fire to create decorative elements.

Arashi means rain in Japanese. Find out why this type of Shibori is called “Arashi” as participants learn how to wrap the fabric, bind it, dye it and then discover the pattern made using this method. Students will make a set of 4 cloth napkins in this class.

Feb 23 · Whisk Brooms · Rebecca Buglio

In this one night class, learn skills and techniques needed to bind your very own unique turkey handbroom. Handbrooms are great to use around the house, sweeping up the studio bench, or just as a decorative touch. During class students will learn about the different types of whisks, while getting to create their own turkey whisk. Equipment, materials, and basic hand binding will be covered. Upper body strength and leg use is required to pull the brooms taught.

Get ready to have fun cutting and pasting! In this one-night workshop, students will learn a number of interesting ways to approach collage, and useful techniques to make their collages more successful. Students are encouraged to bring their own fun and unusual collage materials.

Feb 17 · Underwater?! Basket Weaving · Katie Sharpe

Basket weaving is thought to be the oldest human craft, predating pottery. Indigenous people of Appalachia have historically woven baskets with White Oak, Maple and Rivercane. It is also called underwater basket weaving because the material must be soaked in water so that it can bend and not break during weaving. Students will leave this class with a complete basket using round reed with the Japanese Weave and Three Rod Weave techniques.

Join us to create your very own exquisite enameled butterfly or dragonfly pendant. Delve into the process of crafting as we start by meticulously sawing out the delicate shape of your chosen creature. You'll skillfully apply counter enamel to the back, ensuring its durability, before adorning the front with a vibrant array of enamels. Elevate your creation by adding a charming beaded body, and finally, we'll provide a stylish leather adjustable cord to complete your wearable masterpiece.

Don’t let your kitchen get bogged down with manufactured items. In this one day workshop, students will learn all the skills needed to create their very own rolling pin, spatulas, and vegetable peeler, while focusing on safety and technique in the lathe shop.

Feb 17 · Fashionable Fabric Jewelry · Dongyi Wu

In this workshop, students will learn how to deconstruct and reconstruct the elements from fashion magazines, and then transfer them into wearable fashion jewelry by using fabric and basic metal materials. Students will investigate simple mold making in cut fashion magazines, and learn basic sewing skills. After finishing the fabric sections, students will learn basic metal techniques, such as sawing, oxidation, and cold connections.

Feb 17 · Dry Point Etching with Chine-collé · Kelly Sullivan

Turn any picture or drawing into a mixed media print in this one day workshop. Students will “draw” onto plexiglass with an etching needle and learn how to collage, while they print and leave with unique art pieces off of the press.

Feb 17 · Macraweave Tapestry · Olivia Bridges

In this class, students will learn basic knotting skills and techniques, and how to use these to make a macrame wall hanging. Students will learn how these simple weaving techniques can be applied to macrame to add color and texture. This class is beginner friendly, so no previous knowledge on macrame or weaving is needed!

Jan 29-31 · Doll House Delights: Exploring Miniature Foods in Polymer Clay · Jenn Cole

Explore the world of miniatures with this three day class! Students will learn how to create tromp-l'oeil miniature food perfect for a doll house or for one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces from polymer clay. Class will focus on color mixing polymer for realistic miniature foods, tiny mold-making, tips and tricks for creating millefiori canes, and cold finishing techniques to bring your miniatures to life! Open to all skill levels, magnifiers will be provided.

Jan 29-31 · Katazome Inspired Fabrics · Kelly Sullivan

Katazome is a Japanese dyeing process where stencils and a resist paste are used in order to create patterned fabrics. In this class we will learn to use materials and supplies that are widely available to us in the West to create patterns using stencils and a resist paste that includes ingredients you can get at the store! Participants will leave with several pieces of dyed fabric and, time permitting, might be able to create something from them!

Jan 29-31 · Scenes from Your World · Buie Hancock

Have a favorite landscape or location that brings joy everytime you see it? Students in this class will create scenes in slabs of clay and learn to decorate them with a rainbow of colored ceramic underglazes. Students are encouraged to bring photographic inspiration of their own to use as a design for their creation! Once completed, students will be able to hang or display their pieces at home.

Jan 29-31 · Kudzu Papermaking · Ashlee Mays & Logan Szymanowski

Learn how to harvest and process everyone’s favorite invasive vine! Fine art sheets of Kudzu paper can be pulled from the inner bark of the vine. This class will include harvesting techniques, stripping the bark, beating the pulp, and pulling sheets of handmade paper. No materials are required from the students, only optional kudzu vines from home.

Jan 29-31 · Building up to Bowls · Mitch Jones

Students will focus on small, skill building projects (honey dippers and handles) for the first two nights of this class. As we navigate lathe safety and all the skills and techniques to start out, we will build up our confidence which will allow us to safely turn a bowl on the last night of class.

Jan 29-31 · Embellishing Your Work with Rotary Carving · Rick Urban

Students in this class will be introduced to adding a carved and textured design with rotary carvers to wood pieces. You are encouraged to bring your own forms (vases, vessels, bowls, plates, wall hanging, etc.) to serve as your canvas. If you have nothing to bring, don't worry, we will have something for you to embellish, and you do not have to be a wood turner to enjoy and benefit from this class! After exploring design and texture ideas to fire up your creativity, you will use rotary carving tools to bring your concept to life in relief and add a tactile quality to your work. You will complete the course with a work ready for color or finishing as desired.

Jan 29-31 · Get Lit: Cut, Weld, Light · Kidd Graves

Students in this class will learn how to use the plasma cutter to cut shapes out of steel plate and a Mig welder to weld them together into a square lamp. The final piece will be a lamp sculpture that students will insert a light into to enjoy for years to come.

Feb 19-22 · 3-D Encaustics · Vickie Bradshaw

Unleash your artistic imagination and join us for an immersive four-night Encaustic Sculpture Workshop.. This hands-on class will take you on a journey through the captivating world of sculpting with paper clay and the mesmerizing techniques of encaustic painting. Discover the artistry of transforming raw materials into intricate sculptures, layered with encaustic wax and finished with a stunning crackle effect.

Feb 19-22 · The Natural Way to Draw · Brianna Carroll

This is not your typical drawing class! Students will be given a short warm up exercise which may resemble careful drawing techniques. This will be in stark contrast to the more “natural” way that we will practice next. No more hunching over, scrutinizing every small fleck of the pencil on your paper. You will bring figures, fabric, portraits, and scenery to life right before your own eyes. These are classical figure drawing techniques that embrace contour, gesture, cross contour, shadows, light, and weighted modeling. We will use materials such as charcoal, pastel, and erasers and blending tools to shape our drawings into their form. These are great techniques for those looking to learn how to draw what they see in their environment.

Feb 19-22 · Forest Whimsy in clay · Jean Kranzle

Students will start by throwing or hand building cylindrical forms of clay for altering in this workshop. A vase form, large mug or luminary would be perfect for this exercise. The class will focus on adding and subtracting clay to create the basis for a forest landscape. We will use some simple line drawing to act as inspiration for our low relief project. The class will then use small ribbon tools to carve detail into their landscapes. When the clay is dry enough, underglazes will be applied using a water color technique. Each person should be able to make at least one low relief piece and become more adept in their sculpting, carving and under glazing skills.

Feb 19-22 · Pigment to Painting: Surfaces, Making Paint from Wild Pigments, and Landscape Painting · M Kobe

Come learn the basics of painting surface prep, paint making, and landscape painting. Together we will learn about preparing our canvases for paint, the history and process of natural dry pigment collection, how to make our own paint, and ways to use it! Students will learn to make their own acrylic gesso, as well as watercolor, and acrylic paint sets using four different earth pigments. We will discuss the different locations these pigments come from (including our own backyards!), and how they may be used to connect us and the imagery we make to the landscapes they come from. Students will leave with their own paint sets, as well as a finished acrylic landscape painting.

Feb 19-22 · Casting Signet Rings in Silver · Rosie Amato

The signet is an ancient style of ring historically used as a signature– used like a wearable seal, the wearer would press the flat face of their unique ring into wax to make an impression. In this workshop, participants will carve their own signet rings out of wax and learn to cast them sterling silver through the lost-wax casting process. This workshop will cover wax carving techniques, investment, burnout, casting, and finishing. Open to all experience levels, though we will be focusing on the fundamentals.

Feb 19-22 · Lost Wood Art — Decorated Pods and Vessels! · Rick Urban

Want to make a truly unique hollow vessel? How about a carved and textured pod? Using the Lost Wood process, you will create a flattened, lenticular hollow form as your canvas, carve a design in relief with rotary carvers, and add a texture with woodburning and branding. After exploring design and texture ideas to provide inspiration and release your creativity, you will bring your design to life and add a tactile quality with woodburning and branding to give it that “Ahhh” quality. You will be encouraged and challenged to explore the endless world of designs and find a style all your “own”. While this is not a beginner class, don't worry if you are a little less experienced than some others may be. Your instructor will help you select a suitable form to turn. Some turning experience is required.

Feb 19-22 · Clay Vision Box Workshop · Lisa Kurtz

Learn to make your own clay slab vision boxes to depict goals and/or memories. Students will make and decorate a slab box out of clay and create items out of clay to put into the box. Mixed media, found objects, pictures, and other handmade objects will also be used to decorate the boxes with. Completed vision boxes can be hung on the wall or put in a special place in the home as visual reminders of what you are working towards in your life. All are welcome to join this creative clay workshop.

Spring Family Workshops

Mar 2 · Spring Peepers · Amy Evans

Parent and me option for 5-7, $95
The earliest sign of spring is the song of the peeper. In this class, we will spend the morning building frogs out of earthenware clay. After lunch, we will paint, decorate, and finalize our creations. These frog sculptures can make wonderful additions to your family's garden and flower beds.

Mar 2 · Personalized Platters with Slip Transfer · Amanda Humphreys

Adults, kids ages 7+
Make a unique, personalized platter or tray in this one day class. Participants will learn the techniques to illustrate and underglaze a simple image of their creation and then transfer the image to a slab of clay from newsprint. We will then use press molds to form out slabs into platters or trays. Come try out the magic of slip tranfers in clay.

Mar 2 · Embroidered Initial · Kelly Sullivan

Adults, kids ages 9+
Learn five fun embroidery stitches while designing your very own Initial Wall Hanging. Students will learn: back stitch, running stitch, seed stitch, blanket stitch and French knots. Stencils will be used to create backgrounds and the initial of your choice! Final pieces will be wrapped around a 6x6 wooden panel and students will learn how to finish the backing of their piece for display!

Mar 2 · Mountain Flower Market Basket · Sheri Burns

Adults, kids ages 12+
Students in this class will learn to make their very own Mountain Flower market basket. This basket is a traditional market basket with a rectangle handle incorporated into the body of the basket for sturdiness. Perfect for beginners or more advanced basket makers! The basket will be embellished with flowers made from the weaving material that has been dyed in yellow, pink and purple.

Mar 2 · Sweet Relief: Intro to Relief Printmaking · Caleb Houston

Adults, kids ages 15+
Students in this class will learn the skills and techniques needed to dive into relief prints! This class is a short introduction to small scale relief print, including how to carve blocks from materials such as linoleum and MDF, and how to ink and print them both with a printing press and by hand at home where tools and equipment may be limited.

Mar 2 · Spring Stained Glass Suncatcher · Dawn Edwards

Adults, kids ages 15+
In this class, students will get to experience each of the steps in the copper-foil method of making stained glass art. Students will learn to select a pattern, select, cut, grind, clean, and apply copper foil to the glass, solder the glass pieces together and finally, how to add a jump ring from which to hang the suncatcher. At the end of the class each student will possess their own unique stained glass suncatcher to hang in a window and enjoy as we gain back some daylight in Spring.
