Workshop Overview

Byproducts, castoffs, cut-offs, discards, edits, fragments, remainders, remnants, residue: these aspects and fractions accumulate — sometimes purposefully, sometimes inadvertently — through our processes of making artwork. Are they inherently less valuable or worthy than the objects that occupy the central focus of our making? Do these crumbs, loops, lumps, piles and shards contribute additional meaning that bolsters the primary work? Can the residue become the primary work? This workshop focuses on creating approaches, tools, methods, and systems for holding, elevating, and speaking to the displaced materials and objects of our practices — and perhaps also the displaced parts of ourselves.

Artist Bio

E. Saffronia Downing is an artist and educator invested in craft processes, embodied research, and ecological thought. Downing forages local materials to create site-specific installations and sculptures. Through her work, she posits that the pursuit of foraging considers various points of correspondence between maker and matter. Downing received her MFA in ceramics from School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2020. Recent solo and two-person exhibitions include Mustard Seeds at Interloc, Thomaston, ME; Clay-In-Place at Triangle Projects, Los Angeles, CA; Flattened Flora; Compass Sampler at Roots and Culture, Chicago, IL; and, Field Dug Over at Bad Water Gallery, Knoxville, TN. She has also received fellowships from the College of the Atlantic (2023), Lunder Institute of American Art (2022), and Oxbow School of Art (2021). Downing’s work has been featured in American Craft Magazine, NewCity Art, Sixty Inches From Center, LVL3 and The Lantern. The artist is currently based between Chicago and Upstate New York.
