Artist Bio

Mindy Herrin-Lewis is a figurative artist, metalsmith, and faculty member at East Tennessee State University. She received her BFA from Texas Tech University in 1998 and her MFA from Indiana University 2002. Mindy teaches all levels of metalsmithing courses as well as Figure Sculpture and Figure Drawing. She has a national exhibition record and was chosen Art Jewelry Forum’s Emerging Artist 2002. Recent exhibitions include Tennessee Craft: A Statewide Member Exhibition 2023, 31st Annual Emerald Coast National, Alchemy6 – Second Place Jewelry, Cell Full/Filled: Cloisonné at Voice, Materials Hard + Soft 2022, Best of Tennessee Craft Exhibition 2022, Confluence: A Visual Discourse of US Academic Art Jewelers 2021, No Bigger than a Breadbox: Biennial Small Works Show – Best in Show 2021, DownEast National Indoor Sculpture Exhibition – First Place 2021.

Workshop Description

In this workshop, students will create small-scale porcelain forms that can be manipulated, reproduced, and combined with metal. Students will utilize flexible molds and hand building techniques to refine clay and control materials. This workshop’s topics will include properties of porcelain, micro-tool making, silicone molds, pressing forms, surface treatments, and basic metal fabrication. Additional instruction will be presented on the anatomy of the face and head.
