Artist Bio
Matthew received his MFA in ceramics from the University of Iowa. He held positions as work-study at the Clay Studio in Philadelphia, and studio staff and resident artist at Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts. He participated as year-long artist-in-residence at the Lux Center for the Arts in Lincoln NE, Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago IL, and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. Matthew worked for artist Theaster Gates and Rebuild Foundation and was ceramics instructor at art centers and universities across the US. His sculptural and functional work are exhibited nationally and internationally, including museums in Spain, Croatia, Slovenia and South Korea. He is ceramics technician and instructor at the University of Hartford, CT.
Workshop Description
Are you interested in taking the form and surface of your ceramics to the next level? Come spend a week with ceramic artist and instructor Matthew Dercole and learn what techniques and materials he uses to create pots that are anything but ordinary! Matthew will discuss handbuilding techniques, translucent clay bodies, templates, underglazing and share his recipes of clays and glazes. He will show his unique process for building and firing his work and discuss what to consider when creating a layered surface. You will learn each step of the process from wet clay all the way through finishing with gold luster. Let this spark your imagination and give you the tools to push the boundaries of your own ceramic work. And make sure to bring a notebook and plenty of questions! Open to all skill levels.
