Artist Bio

Clay Burnette has his studio practice in Columbia, South Carolina and holds AS, BAIS, and MLIS degrees from the University of South Carolina. He is a self-taught pine needle basketmaker who has coiled longleaf pine needles with waxed linen thread for over 45 years. Burnette has exhibited his work in over 260 venues throughout the US and abroad and has been featured in numerous print publications including Rooted, Revived, Reinvented: Basketry in America (2017). He was selected as the South Carolina Arts Commission’s Craft Fellow for 2022 and was Best in Show at the NBO Conference at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in 2013.

Workshop Description

During this workshop students will explore the basketmaking process of coiling southern longleaf pine needles using waxed linen thread. Material processing (dyeing and painting) and preservation with beeswax will also be covered in class. You will learn about the various stitches used to make both symmetrical and free-form shapes. There will be emphasis placed on incorporating texture, pattern, and color in your pieces while using a large sewing needle and a pair of sharp-pointed scissors. Class will include one-on-one instruction and lots of tips and ideas for further exploration. Open to all skill levels.
