Artist Bio

Jocmarys Viruet Feliciano is an artist from Puerto Rico who focuses on papermaking and book arts. She has a BA in visual arts from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus and received her MFA from the University of Iowa Center for the Book. Jocmarys worked as intern at the Morgan Conservatory in Cleveland, Ohio, as well as assistant for Timothy Barrett at the University of Iowa, Oakdale Paper Research & Facility, and the Rare Book School in Virginia. Jocmarys received the Iowa Arts Fellowship and the Graduate Diversity Fellowship. Jocmarys taught several bookbinding workshops at the Museo Casa del Libro in San Juan, art workshops at the Museo de Arte MUSA and, papermaking classes through Taller Lapaduma in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico. Her first experience of papermaking was in 2014 as an exchange student in South Korea.

Workshop Description

THINKING THROUGH MATERIALS is a papermaking class focused on the creation of a range of materials and paper surfaces using various papermaking processes and techniques. The goal of the class is to create a paper/material physical library or resource that can support future papermaking projects and inspire ideas. The class will include beginners. Western Style sheet forming, drying and pressing, as well as paper manipulation during the wet stage. Fibers like cotton, flax, paper mulberry and abaca will be used and explored and combined. There will be daily demonstrations and explanations on techniques, materials and equipment used and plenty of time for experimentation and play, papermaking for fun. At the end, students will be encouraged to share their papermaking interesting finds and documentations. Open to all skill levels.
