Free the Sheet! Paper Marbling and Book Arts

Workshop Overview
At the end of every paper marbling workshop, students will often comment, “Now I have to figure out what to do with these papers!” Or, “I’m too scared to cut them up!” Or, “Maybe I’ll just frame it like this… I don’t know.” Here is a response to those comments, in workshop form! This two-in-one workshop will start with a comprehensive introduction to paper marbling where students will learn the centuries-old process of floating paint onto a water-based bath, creating intricate motifs in the paints, and then permanently transferring the design onto paper. The second half of this workshop will focus on transforming freshly marbled sheets of paper into new forms, shapes, and contexts by cutting, folding, and gluing… freeing them from the life of just another “pretty piece of paper” in the back of a flat file.
