Workshop Overview

If you’re tired of manufactured prongs and bezels; If you just can’t find an elegant way to incorporate that special stone, enamel sample or little found treasure into your work; If you’re stumped and just need to shake things up, then Imaginative Captures is for you!  This information-packed workshop is full of tips and tricks and can help you develop new, more integrated setting (capturing) solutions and break down some of the rigid walls that exist between ideas, process and materials. Students will get up close and personal with the flex shaft, soldering, riveting and cold connecting. Students must have basic jewelry skills and experience with the rolling mill, torches, hammers, and buffers. Required skills include drilling with the flex shaft machine, sawing, filing, silver soldering and basic bezel setting. Students enrolled must be able to solder unattended.

Artist Bio

Andy Cooperman makes all sorts of things from all sorts of things.  He is known for applying the craft and discipline of metalsmithing to a wide variety of materials ranging from ping-pong balls to paper and plastic chickens to porcupine quills. Andy has been a jeweler and metalsmith for over thirty-five years and a writer and educator for close to that. Andy’s work has been exhibited widely and can be found in public and private collections as well as books and publications that include The Penland Book of Jewelry, Humor in Craft and many more. Andy lectures nationally and has spoken at the Society of North American Goldsmiths conference, the annual Colorado Metalsmithing Association conference and as keynote speaker for both the International Society of Glass Bead Makers and the East Carolina University Symposium.
