Workshop Overview

This woodturning workshop for beginners will cover the safe use of the wood lathe using different wood chisels that students will sharpen themselves. Students will learn how to make bowls, platters, candle sticks, yard art mushrooms, and anything else they may be interested in. Join this worksjop and make woodturning your new creative outlet!

Techniques

  • How to use different woodturning chisels such as a bowl gouge and scraper
  • Create a pleasing form
  • How to sand and apply a finish to bring out the beauty of the wood

Materials

  • Locally sourced Maple or Cherry

Outcomes

  • Complete a piece a day or possibly more
  • Bowls, candle sticks, platters, or yard art mushrooms

Artist Bio

Holland Van Gores is a woodworking artist living in the Pisgah Forest, near Asheville NC. Holland and his family relocated to Western NC in 2012 after spending 34 years in St Thomas, United States Virgin Islands. Holland headed up a construction company in the islands specializing in wood construction. It was there that Holland’s love for wood was realized. He began woodturning 20 years ago and has developed his own unique style. Holland also teaches at John C. Campbell Folk Art School and demonstrates at different woodturning clubs around Western NC.
