Artist Bio
Julie Belcher
Julie Belcher is a mixed media artist, and her studio, Pioneer House, is located in Knoxville, TN. She holds an MFA from School of Visual Arts, NYC (1995), and a BFA from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (1986). Julie Belcher played a pivotal role in the revival of letterpress printmaking several decades ago. Julie takes elements from her Appalachian roots to create 2d works in a modern context with traditional and salvaged equipment. She combines many processes to create encaustic paintings, including original prints, drawings, and textures, among layers of translucent waxy color. Julie also has a love of everything vintage and, along with her partner, owns a vintage western wear shop housed in her studio. As teacher and artist, she honors the hardworking women who are her inspiration, taking to heart mottos collected from unlikely places including this one found in a basement by the washer and dryer hookups “The rooster may crow but the hen delivers the goods.”

Explore the 2D Arts Studio
Located in the historic West Building, the 2D Studio is a bright, multi-use room for all 2D related workshops at Arrowmont. Ideal for our printmaking, bookmaking, and painting or drawing classes, there’s plenty of room for groups of up to 20. A small outdoor courtyard offers a shaded place of respite or an extended outdoor instruction space.
