Workshop at a glance

In this workshop students will learn the fundamentals of tapestry weaving, beading, and basketry in order to translate creative writing, poetry, & journaling into tapestries, sculptures, & installations. Students will also be introduced to experimental materials & techniques, including laser cut tapestry looms and 3D printed beads. Students will leave the workshop with a working knowledge of various textile techniques, a tapestry loom of their own, and the creative energy to continue to experiment, write, and create.

Artist Bio

Alex McClay lives and works in Ludlow, KY as an interdisciplinary artist, co-founder of Spit Bite Studios, and Creative Director at Waltz & Wetherly Interior Design. She graduated with an MFA in Studio Art from the University of Georgia in 2021. She received her BFA in Studio Art from the University of Cincinnati in 2014. She was a Core Fellow at Penland School of Craft in North Carolina from 2016-2018, where she studied craft in many forms, including textiles, metals, printmaking, book arts and papermaking. Her current practice engages language, material, and the human body to question and disrupt the power dynamics present in our most intimate and vulnerable spaces. Her work has been included in multiple exhibitions and venues across the United States, including SPRING//BREAK New York (New York, NY) and SPRING//BREAK LA (Los Angeles, CA), Abigial Ogilvy Gallery (Boston, MA), Women Made Gallery (Chicago, IL), Weston Art Gallery (Cincinnati, OH), ArtSpace (Raleigh, NC), Haggerty Gallery (Dallas TX), and Robert C Williams Museum of Papermaking (Atlanta, GA).
