Embodied Narratives

August 4 - 9, 2024

Rob Millard-Mendez  ·  website

Workshop Overview

Contemporary artists like Nick Cave, Raúl de Nieves and Daphne Karstens make powerful sculptures that adorn, protect, and extend the body. In this workshop, students will learn techniques to make three different wearable forms (a headpiece, a wearable/wall-mounted mask, and a custom shoulder-mount). Working mostly with wood, students will also learn techniques to safely create forms out of wood with hand tools and power tools. Stack lamination and directed lamination will allow us to develop strategically structured carving blanks that will save time, material, and money. Working with the body opens the door to many narrative possibilities. This workshop will explore some of the conceptual directions that work well with wearable art like self-portraiture, personae, and identity. This workshop is open to students of all skill levels.
