Sammy Long lives in Brandon, Mississippi and teaches at the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi. Retired from the natural gas pipeline industry, he began woodturning as a hobby and is now known for his embellished hollow forms with leaf carvings. Long also demonstrates at woodturning clubs and regional symposiums.
Students will learn the fundamentals of relief carving using rotary carvers for embellishing their lathe turned work. You will learn to choose and transfer your designs and practice using various burs and techniques needed to gain the desired carved effects for your project. Participants will also discover how to add texture to their work, remove negative space, and select options for sanding and finishing. Students will complete one to two finished pieces during class. Open to all skill levels.
