Artist Bio

Sam Lopez is a potter and educator living and working in San Diego, California. He makes wheel-thrown porcelain pottery that enhances experiences of sharing food and drink with family and friends. His passion for cooking and enjoying diverse cuisine influences his approach to making thoughtfully crafted pottery for the home and table. Lopez is dedicated to a life of perpetual learning and experimenting with his studio practice and is continually evolving his work to better suit daily use in the home. You can find his pottery in kitchen collections throughout the U.S. and abroad.

Workshop Description

In this workshop students will learn how they can make pots that reflect their sensibilities to further evolve their pottery voice. You will be guided through a series of timed-wheel-throwing exercises that are designed to improve fundamental techniques that will help you to make your work more efficiently. Demonstrations will include methods for producing a variety of utilitarian pottery forms, production throwing methods, sectional throwing, trimming, and loading/firing a cone 10 reduction soda firing. Participants will leave class with soda fired glazed pieces, bisqueware, and a strong foundation for making objects on the potter’s wheel. Open to all levels, however some wheel experienced is preferred but not required.
