Artist Bio
Po Wen Liu is a ceramic artist and educator and is director of ceramics at Sawtooth School for the Visual Art in Winston-Salem, NC. He received his BFA in ceramics and ceramics sculpture from the Rochester Institute of Technology and an MFA in ceramics from Northern Illinois University. He served as director of The Pottery Workshop Jingdezhen, and executive director of Jingdezhen International Studio where he facilitated international ceramics events in China and abroad. Liu taught ceramic courses nationally and internationally including the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Leksands folkhögskola, in Leksand, Sweden, and raku kiln building workshop at the School of Design and Arts, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing, China.
Workshop Description
From a small tea pot to a large storage jar, making a properly fitting lid is a challenging process to potters. This unique hands-on workshop will focus on creating different type of lids and flanges on the potters wheel. Students will learn how to create various type of lids based on the function of a vase. Wheelthrowing techniques and surface decoration, such as inlay and carving, will be covered in class. Discussions will include understanding why shrinkage occurs and clay properties from a ceramic engineering perspective. This is not a beginner-level class, but open to intermediate to advanced-skill levels.
