The Exquisite Surface

In this workshop, students will explore the ceramic surface. Through demonstrations and hands-on participation, you will learn a variety of techniques. The class covers how to develop a composition using pattern and color through brushwork, wax and paper resist, Mishima (inlay), trailing and carving. Students should bring greenware and/or bisque-ware for decoration and glazing during the workshop. Glaze firings will be cone 6/7, and a grog-free cone 6 clay body is recommended. Open to all skill levels, however some experience preferred.

Sean O’Connell is a studio potter and educator living in Red Lodge, Montana. He has taught at the college level in the U.S. and Canada. He has been an Artist-in-Residence at the Archie Bray Foundation and Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts. In 2016, he was named one of six Emerging Artist at the annual NCECA conference in Kansas City. He earned his MFA from the School for American Crafts/RIT and his BFA at the Kansas City Art Institute.
