Thinking (And Turning) Outside The Box

August 30, 2018 – September 2, 2018

Jim Scarsella

The goal of this workshop is for students to complete a deep study of the woodturned box. Course topics include design, wood selection and grain orientation, turning methods, fit and finish, and ornamenting with knobs and finials. Students will complete several boxes during the class, and most importantly leave with a comprehensive understanding of this woodturned form. Some prior experience at the lathe is beneficial, however the class is open to all skill levels.

Jim Scarsella has been a lifelong woodworker, and has been turning for 10 years. He is the deputy director of Arrowmont and has taught workshops throughout the country. Concentrating mainly on hollow forms and boxes, his work has been featured in national and international publications and has won several juried awards.
