Birds, Bugs and Beasts: Carving the Natural
June 17, 2018 – June 23, 2018
In this basic carving workshop students will observe their environment and learn how to represent its forms, textures and details in all their richness. You will explore both bas relief and carving in the round on a small scale, with tools ranging from the traditional to the mechanical. Mixed materials are welcome as additions to your creations. This is a perfect class for bringing the natural world inside and learning how to integrate detail into your large work, to create a narrative, and to learn the fundamentals of carving. Open to all skill levels.

Sarah Martin is an assistant professor at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. She has previously taught at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and the Western Piedmont Community College in North Carolina. She is a former Artist-in-Residence at Penland and teaches workshops nationally.
