Artist Bio

Kimberly Winkle is a TN-based maker whose work, both furniture and objects, celebrates traditional furniture-making techniques combined with a strong use of color and pattern. Her work has been included in exhibitions at SOFA Chicago, WANTEDDesign NYC, Architectural Digest Show NYC, the Museum of Art in Wood, and the Fuller Craft Museum. She earned her MFA from San Diego State University and is currently a Professor of Art and Director of the School of Art, Craft & Design at TN Tech University. kimberlywinkle.com

Workshop Description

This class is designed to provide students with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of woodturning in a fun, open, and sharing atmosphere. Whether a beginner or simply need to improve current skills, this workshop will guide participants through tool selection, sharpening, safety, and techniques and will help them realize the possibilities of turning. Students will begin with spindle turning and then progress into faceplate turning to make small bowls or platters. Aspects of design and surface embellishment, using milk paint and texture, will also be explored. Each student will leave with a series of finished objects and a solid understanding of woodturning and its potential as an art form.
