Ruth Miller is an embroidered tapestry artist that creates intricate portraits with thread. She developed a love for embroidery early on and started using this as an alternative to painting. The subjects of her tapestries are often portraits of actual individuals. Miller lives and works in an unincorporated Gulf Coast town. She credits her Mississippi born mother for teaching her how to sew as well as her two aunts that taught her the basics of needlework. She graduated from the High School of Music and Art in Harlem which was later merged with LaGuardia Arts. Miller began as a painter at Cooper Union but found she preferred the clean and quiet nature of textiles.
