Richard W. James grew up in rural Tennessee and received his BFA from the University of Tennessee at Martin and his MFA in ceramics from the University of Kansas in 2016, where his thesis work received the 2016 Sculpture Magazine Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award. He has been a summer artist-in-residence at Zhenrutang in Jingdezhen (2015), China, a long-term resident at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee (2016) and a long-term resident at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana (2017-19). He is currently assistant professor of sculpture at Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
