Natural Dye Tradition and Inspiration ・ Catherine EllisTextiles

This class will introduce participants to the use of natural dyes on wool, silk, and cotton and natural plant-based inks for paper. We will explore traditional practices from Appalachia and some “light” science to explain why the processes work. The class will use locally harvested materials, as well as some of the classic dyes from afar. An organic indigo vat will be used for dyeing indigo blue. Participants will learn to create a palette of lasting color on yarns or fabric by mixing and layering colors. Open to all levels.
