Hannah Shaban・ Clay
Hannah Shaban was selected to be an exhibiting artist at Arrowmont for the New Forms juried student exhibition. Shaban’s background as a Lebanese American and her frequent visits to be with family in the Middle East has informed her of the rich culture and generous people of her home region. These experiences inform her artwork. Hannah received her BFA with a concentration in sculpture and ceramics from University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She continued her education at Virginia Commonwealth University earning her MFA in craft/material studies with a concentration in ceramics. Once she graduated she was invited to Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan Maine to become a resident artist. Using elements of ‘orientalist’ art layered with her current, Arab subjects, she attempts to reconcile the cultural divide through the initiation of physical and spatial interactions with her ceramic figures.
