This class covers the key components necessary to construct a clay slab box or other enclosed form. Students create a non-traditional box choosing from a variety of templates, learn how to construct a lid, and different decorating techniques including pressed texture, carving, and painting.
*Pieces will be fired by Arrowmont staff and available for pickup at a later date.
Instructor · Horacio Casillas
Horacio Casillas was born in Chandler, Arizona and raised in Jalisco, Mexico for most of his childhood before his family moved back to the United States to San Angelo, TX. In 2013 he received his BFA in ceramics from Angelo State University and his MFA from the University of North Texas in 2018. Horacio’s most recent work is carved to represent cathedral windows and entryways inspired by Gothic architecture and the churches of his hometown of Tepatitlan, Jalisco. “Focusing my work through the lens of my Catholic faith has given me an appreciation for the traditions found in the Church including her influence on architecture.” Horacio is currently an Arrowmont 2021-22 Artist in Residence.
