Enriching lives through art and craft

Arrowmont Craft Conversations: David Ellsworth

ARROWMONT CRAFT CONVERSATIONS is a video series that highlights artists in the Arrowmont community. Our partnership with Arrowmont faculty and community members has contributed to Arrowmont’s longevity, growth as a school of arts and crafts, and our reputation as an institution that welcomes everyone. The artists who appear in this series exemplify the characteristics that represent the School — they span generations and are among the most experienced, capable, and innovative in the arts and crafts world.

Each of the artists in this series offers insights into their work and their reflections on being a part of the Arrowmont community.

David Ellsworth is a master woodturner and has taught at Arrowmont for almost 40 years. He operates his own private school of woodturning at his studio in Weaverville, North Carolina. He has become known as one of the premier designers of hollow wooden vessel forms. Ellsworth is a fellow and former trustee of the American Craft Council and received the prestigious Master of the Medium award in wood. He is the recipient of the Lifetime Membership Award from the American Association of Woodturners. He authored “Ellsworth on Woodturning: How a Master Creates Bowls, Pots, and Vessels,” created a personal line of DVD tutorials, “The Ellsworth Library of Tutorial Videos/DVDs on Woodturning,” and designed his own line of hollow turning tools and sharpening jigs. David has been an instructor at Arrowmont since 1983.
