Arrowmont Connections: Dietlind Vander Schaaf “Everyday Hero” painting giveaway
April 06, 2020
Arrowmont is a special community full of creative people – a family who know that coming together and making art is important. We talk a lot about the Arrowmont Experience – connecting through craft and community. That connection exists beyond physical proximity. It is in shared memories and new ideas. It lives in the friendships we make with each other. It grows when we learn and support one another.
Whether on campus or off, we are connected as members of the Arrowmont family. Over the next few weeks, we are going to share stories from our community of instructors, residents, and students in a new series, Arrowmont Connections.
Dietlind Vander Schaaf lives in Portland, Maine and is a core instructor for R&F Handmade Paints and the former president of New England Wax. She is an Arrowmont instructor, scheduled to teach ENCAUSTIC: LAYERS, TRANSLUCENCY AND SEE THROUGHS, November 15 – 21, 2020. In the current health crisis, Dietlind has been inspired to to do her first giveaway! Read more details below, and nominate your favorite Everyday Hero for consideration by midnight Tuesday, April 7, 2020:
EVERYDAY HERO GIVEAWAY
In honor of all the everday heroes out there doing something to help their communities during this dark time, I am holding my first ever giveaway.
Tell me about your favorite everyday hero. Maybe they are working the frontline at your local hospital. Maybe they are homeschooling kids and sewing masks to donate. Maybe they organized a balcony singalong or are picking up groceries for someone in need. It doesn’t need to be something huge. I am just as interested in the small and often unseen ways we help one another.
If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you may have already seen this contest. You can comment on my posts to enter or email me your nomination. Tell me why this person is your everyday hero.
I’ve assembled an awesome jury to review submissions independently. The winner will select one of the 12″ x 12″ paintings featured here and I will send it, along with a copy of my catalog [PAUSE] to the person you nominated.
You are welcome to nominate as many people as you wish. The contest ends at midnight, Tuesday, April 7 and the winner will be announced this Sunday, April 12, 2020.

EVERYDAY HERO WINNERS
Donna Dwyer, nominated by both Caren-Marie Michel and Judy West Schneider, is the CEO of My Place Teen Center in Westbrook, Maine. Since the center is closed at the moment, she developed a plan to make full meals for anyone to pick up at no cost. Her staff is also delivering meals to families, along with personal hygiene kits, and doing welfare checks on families and kids isolated from school.
Rachael Onik told us about her sister Elizabeth Keefe. This girl has faced a lot of obstacles in her lifetime, losing her father at 13, raising two boys as a single parent, and putting herself through nursing school while waiting tables. She is on the front line like so many in the healthcare industry, working the night shift in the ER at Boston Medical. Her fiancé also works at Boston Medical. Their wedding is scheduled for June 5th.
And finally, Tracey Leavitt’s twenty-two year old son, Asa Leavitt-Witt was so concerned when he heard about the virus spreading that he single-handedly engineered getting his mother home from a painting retreat in Mexico. He made all her necessary travel arrangements, orchestrating her return so she wouldn’t have to go through customs with returnees from Europe, and she wouldn’t have to fly through New York City. Once she was safely home and beginning her fourteen day quarantine, he announced he’d be arriving the next day, having driven from San Francisco to New York so he could be there to get groceries and run errands. He is currently working his job remotely from a nearby Airbnb.
All three of these folks will receive a 12” x 12” painting selected by the individual who nominated them, along with a copy of my catalog [PAUSE].
