Designer Basketmaking: Copper Tides / October 31 – November 5, 2021
Judy Zugish, basketmaker, began experimenting with cultivating fibers and using them to invent contemporary, sculptural basket forms nearly 35 years ago As her notable fiber arts garden grew, so also her basketmaking, teaching, and studio work developed maturity, expanding to national and international exhibitions and teaching in many cultures.
Judy’s delight in the irregular kindles the creative in her students and together they find their own hidden gardens of
expression. She is co-founder of Fishsticks Basketry school, a field study education resource bringing local, national and international weavers to her celebrated nursery garden to workshop, to laugh, to learn.
A deep respect for the historical place of basketry has led to guiding travels in Japan, England, Germany, Thailand, Mexico, and Australia. Recent years brought her to the willow forests of Denmark, and residencies in Australia and New Zealand. She returns often, illuminated.
Judy’s connection with materials she grows and processes means each piece becomes a thought filled container, and she has begun writing the poetry of each basket as its companion.
