Fall in the Smokies is a great time to take inspiration from the fiery colors of autumn and fire the Manibigama wood kiln. This action packed week begins with decorating/glazing pots with flashing slips, underglazes, and glazes. Develop and enrich your pot’s surfaces with brushwork and wax resists. The class will load and fire the kiln, taking turns stoking while paying close attention to the effects of different kinds of wood and frequency of stoking. Students will explore brushes, pattern making on the pottery surface, slip/glaze strategies, and other decorating techniques including Michael’s pigmented wax resist technique. At the end of the week, the class will unload the wood kiln and assess the results and have informal critiques of the pots. Bring your cone ten stoneware or porcelain pots that have been bisque fired.
