“A drawing is an autobiographical record of one’s discovery of an event seen, remembered, or imagined.”
John Berger
Currently, I am exploring the spaces and physical objects of my childhood through the medium of drawing. I am interested in the interplay of what I remember now as an adult and what I perceive I remembered as a child. I believe the gulf between child and adult perception is wide and deep. During the process of making, I am attempting to free myself of adult reasoning and justification through mark making. I view my childhood events through the filter of my current emotional state, which is somewhat detached and reflective. The mark making is raw and is an attempt at embodying the feelings, space and presence of myself as a child. During the process of developing the depicted object to a more realized state, I am attempting to create a structure to understand that raw experience. I create the works in layers, which include different processes such as screen-printing, monotype, sewing, painting and drawing to create a dense, and at times, over worked surface. This surface reflects my chaotic internalized search to understand the past through a present reflection.
