- Category:

A spring tradition at Arrowmont is the weekend workshop session dedicated to members of Pi Beta Phi. In 2011, the program was blended with a regular weekend workshop session to diversify offerings while continuing the opportunity for Pi Phis to bring friends to experience the School or to gather with sisters for a special reunion while making art in a supportive and inspiring place—a long tradition and legacy that is part of the unique bond between the school and the fraternity.
Pi Phi weekend has seven wonderful workshops offered as detailed below, along with special activities.
The weekend begins with a reception at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday and classes end at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Registration is now open.
Some classes fill quickly, so early registration is encouraged.
The $50 registration fee is waived for all Pi Phis!
BOOKS — Beginning Bookmaking
Have you ever wanted to create your own personal books? This class will begin exploration of the basics of bookmaking by creating different types of folded books such as pamphlet, accordion, and star books. As students get more comfortable folding, tearing and cutting paper, the class will proceed to sew a more complicated multi-signature Coptic book. What participants learn in this workshop can be easily expanded upon when they return home. This class is intended for beginners.
Note: Course fee for this class is $310. It was incorrectly printed in the workshop catalog.
CLAY — Tiles to Tea Pots and Beyond
Participants will design and make a tile mold using Styrofoam. Students should come prepared with several 8" x 8" sketches which will be transferred to Styrofoam and their designs will be burned into the Styrofoam. Clay tiles will be made and participants encouraged to experiment with the tiles to create tea pots, bowls, vases, etc. Students should bring several bisque-ware pieces or commercial earthenware tiles to paint on with under-glazes. The instructor will demonstrate his under-glaze techniques and students will be able to decorate their bisque pieces. The class will be working with low fire, cone 06 clay and glazes; however, the techniques are applicable to any temperature.

FIBER/FABRIC — Print It , Paint It , Feel It , Love It
Silk is a fabric that is wonderful to touch and sometimes thought of as intimidating to crafters. This class will dispel this myth as students explore the many ways that silk can be dyed, printed, and painted with fiber reactive dyes and flowable fabric paints. Students will experiment with various dyeing and painting techniques as they create fabulous silk scarves featuring beautiful patterns and exquisite color. The process is so easy that it may just become addictive.

PAINTING — Delicious Oil Painting
Feast on this. Luscious, buttery oil paint is a substance that has always lent itself beautifully to the depiction of food. Food gives us access to so many meanings of comfort, sustenance, culture and even romance. Learn to select a good idea, build a successful composition and manage color mixing. The class will then put paint to canvas to produce some tasty and desirable paintings that arise out of the universal topics of food and eating. Basic drawing skills are helpful.
