2008 Children & Young Adult Community Classes

Class Schedule: Classes meet Saturday mornings 9:00 am until noon January 12 - February 9, 2008.
The classes are open to any student interested in art and offered by grade divisions.
Tuition: $95 per class, per child, and includes most materials.

Art Explorers
This is a multi-media class especially designed for the energies and interests of young children. Imagination and individual expression will be emphasized. A series of projects such as painting, drawing and printmaking will introduce line, shape, texture, and color to these little adventurers.

Grades: K-3 $95

Donna Moore
received her BA from Augustana College and has been teaching art classes at public and private schools and art centers for over 15 years. She currently teaches at Thackston School in Knoxville.

Handbuilding Clay: Under the Big Top, Under the Sea
What would an underwater circus be like? Let’s find out! In this class, we will use various handbuilding techniques in clay, including slab, pinch, and coil methods to create our own colorful collaborative imaginary ocean circus.

Grades: 1-5 $95

Alex Kraft
is Arrowmont artist-in-residence. She received her MFA in Ceramics from the University of Montana and was a short-term resident artist at the Archie Bray Foundation.

Funky Felted Creatures
Through brainstorming and sketching exercises you will draw your own imaginary creatures, then bring them to life in wool felt! This is a wet, soapy, hands-on class that turns wool into felt. We will cover basic patterning and sewing techniques, wet felting, fabric construction and embellishment. At the end of class, you will have your own family of imaginary stuffed creatures.

Grades: 3-7 $95

Kim Eichler-Messmer
is an Arrowmont artist-in-residence; received her MFA in Textiles from the University of Kansas where she taught a variety of textiles classes.

Potter’s Wheel Basics
TExperience the magic of the potter’s wheel as we learn to create a variety of thrown forms such as cups, bowls and more. Wheel and hand building techniques will be used to complete several projects. Students will also learn how to glaze their creations.

Grades: 3-12 $95

Virginia McKinney
is a studio artist and former Arrowmont artist-in-residence. She has a BS in Art Education and Design from S.U.N.Y., Buffalo with a concentration in clay and has taught middle and high school art for many years.

Discovering Your Own Painting Style in Acrylics & Oils
This is a great class to learn many new painting methods in acrylics and oils. Explore the exciting possibilities of acrylics on canvas board and paper. Progress to oil painting using the traditional style of the old masters, as well as the newer methods used by the impressionists. Use these opportunities of discovery to develop your own personal painting style.

Grades 5-12 $95

Ed Lockett
has worked with Arrowmont’s children’s classes for more than 15 years. He has a BS degree in Art Education from East Tennessee State University and an MA degree in Media Services. Ed is an accomplished potter and painter who teaches at Tennessee High School in Bristol, TN.

Glass Fusing
This interactive class teaches the foundations of glass fusing while exploring different techniques to create fun colorful fused glass projects from transparent, opaque and iridescent glasses. Emphasis will also be placed on learning about studio safety, equipment and glass types, providing a great foundation in fused glass!

Grades 6-12 $95

Kitty Alcott
is a fused glass artist living in Gatlinburg; BA in Art from University of Florida and fused glass training at Arrowmont; member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild for glass & the Foothills Craft Guild in glass & pottery.

Basics of Woodturning
Discover the excitement of a woodshop while exploring the basics of woodturning. Working on the lathe and using tools such as scrapers and bowl gouges, there will be a focus on the importance of shop safety as you develop skills to create basic bowls, plates and spindles. Demonstrations of proper finishing techniques will complete the class.

Grades: 6-12 $95

Joe Ruminski
has been turning professionally for the past five years and has turned over 500 pieces for the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. He is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, the AAW and the Carolina Mountain Woodturners. He has demonstrated and taught throughout the Southeast.

Fun with Metal
In this fun metals class, we will play with an array of basic metal techniques to create a variety of jewelry and objects in metal. While learning to saw, solder, and texture metal, create one of a kind rings, pendants and keychains. We will also experiment with non-traditional materials and found treasures to create your own personal heirlooms. This is sure to be an exciting class for both beginners and those with previous metals experience.

Grades 6-12 $95

Erin Gray
is an artist residing in Greenville, NC, and is also completing a Gallery internship at Arrowmont. She received her BFA in Metal/Jewelry Design from East Carolina University and is a former Arrowmont artist-in-residence.

Funk-tional Wood
Experience the excitement of woodworking using a variety of creative and lo-tech methods that do not require the use of expensive machinery. Using just about anything we can get our hands on, including wood, we will build functional sculptural boxes for the wall, table top, or anywhere else we can think to put them. Students should bring along anything that they don’t mind screwing, gluing or otherwise attaching to something else, as well as a lot of imagination and willingness to have fun.

Grades: 4-8 $95

Ted Lott
is an Arrowmont artist-in-residence; received his BFA in Woodworking and Furniture Design from the Maine College of Art in 2006. He is a native of the Midwest, originally from Wisconsin.

Photography Fun
Discover your world in a unique way! Learn how to make your own pinhole camera from an ordinary coffee can. After making your camera, we will take some short trips around campus to expose your images. You will learn how to process and print your unique images on black and white paper in the darkroom. The creative possibilities in the class are endless.

Grades: 7-12 $95

Jill Greene
is a commercial and nature photographer in Sevierville and is Arrowmont’s staff photographer. She studied photography at Nashville State Technical Institute. Her work is widely published throughout the Southeast.

Collage: Exploring Storytelling & Ideas of Identity
Working with paper, transfers, and mixed media, we will cut, tear and paste until our heart’s content. The class will explore personal journal making, storybook making, and collage to cultivate our creative spirit and build confidence in expressing our ideas. Everyone is encouraged to bring a personal object and images that will inspire their creative journey.

Grades: 8-12 $95

Sarah Wiseman
is artist-in-residence at Arrowmont; received her MFA from the University of Alabama where she taught drawing, design and printmaking classes. She has also taught at various community centers in Michigan to children and adults.
