Fall 2007 Adult Community Classes

Class Schedule: Classes meet Tuesday & Thursday evenings 6:30-9:00 pm, November 6-December 11.
There will be no class November 22 due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Classes are open to those 16 and older.

Open Studio: There is open studio time Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30 am until class time
and Saturdays 8:30 am - 4:30 pm.

Materials: Students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for class.
A materials list compiled by your instructor will be sent upon registration.

Lab Fees: Lab fees (separate from materials described above) are charged for materials/equipment
ordered by instructors to be used in the classroom by the entire class.
Tuition and lab fees are indicated for each course.

Explore the Unique Print!
Try various types of printmaking: monotype, collograph and etching. In this class, we will focus on creating your own personal print language. Class instruction will include producing the plate or matrix and creating a unique, one of a kind print! No printmaking experience is required, just bring ideas and inspiration! All levels.
Tuition & lab fee: $150

Sarah Wiseman
is an artist-in-residence at Arrowmont; received her MFA from the University of Alabama where she taught drawing, design and printmaking classes. She has also taught at various community centers in Michigan to children and adults.

Wheel Throwing Functional Pottery
This will be an exciting course on creating functional pottery using the potter’s wheel. Explore the basics of throwing, trimming and glazing, as well as delve briefly into the rich history of pottery. This class will concentrate mainly on form, giving you the tools necessary to create the work that you desire. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced thrower, lessons are designed to challenge you to make the best work possible. All levels.

Adam Paulek
received his MFA from the University of Tennessee and BA in Elementary Education from Buena Vista University. He was apprentice to Hank Goodman in Arden, NC, for two years and is currently working out of his home studio south of Clinton, TN.

Basic Drawing & Painting Techniques
Nurture your creativity by opening up the world of line and color. Using a variety of pencil drawing and watercolor techniques, learn skills to produce more accurate drawings. The emphasis will be on value studies, both with pencil and with watercolor. You will learn to use the grid method to help you visualize going from a three-dimensional object or scene to a two-dimensional sketch on paper. We will work from photos and still life objects in class, exploring the subtle beauty of creating both pencil drawings and watercolor paintings. Beginner.

Andrea Wilson
is a watercolor and mixed media artist living in Pittman Center; member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, her work has received numerous awards including “Best in show” for “Mosaic Panel” at the 13th Sevier County Juried Exhibition at Arrowmont in 2007.

Earrings, Earrings, Earrings!
In this class, we will learn the basics of metalsmithing and jewelry design while making your own unique pairs of earrings. Soldering, piercing, simple forming and fabrication, surface embellishment through texture, patina, basic stone setting and final finishing processes will be covered. Traditional ear wire and post earrings will be discussed and created along with many funky and outrageous styles and materials. So bring a favorite pair to share and we will have an earring extravaganza! All levels.

Fabulous Felted Accessories
Felting is a fun, easy way to make fabulous accessories and gifts. With only wool, soap and water, we will create beautiful, one of a kind bags, jewelry and scarves. We will explore different possibilities with wet felting including seamless construction, inlay and lamination with silk and lace, stitching and beading. All levels. Tuition & lab fee: $150

Kim Eichler-Messmer
is an Arrowmont artist-in-residence; received her MFA in Textiles from the University of Kansas where she taught a variety of textiles classes.

Drawing & Clay
Explore the malleable nature of clay in relation to the gestural qualities of drawing. Translate images into clay through techniques such as sgraffito, mishima, engobe, slip trailing and image transfer. We will navigate territories including figure drawing, contour drawing, abstraction, landscape and imagination. All levels.

Alex Kraft
is an Arrowmont artist-in-residence. She received her MFA in Ceramics from the University of Montana and was a short-term resident artist at the Archie Bray Foundation.

Photography – Basics of Lighting
This class will focus on the interaction between light and film and the impact of light on the mood of the photographic image both in studio and the natural environment. There will be field trips designed to explore manipulation of natural lighting to evoke a personalized mood in your nature images, as well as work with studio lighting to expose you to basic lighting concepts in portraiture and still life. You should have basic knowledge of your camera operation. Students with black and white film development and printing experience will have opportunities to improve their skills. Students without experience will have the opportunity to learn.A 35mm camera is preferred for those interested in B&W printing; however, digital cameras are welcome if you provide your own laptop and a means of producing prints. All levels.

Jill Greene
is a commercial and nature photographer in Sevierville and is Arrowmont’s staff photographer. She studied photography at Nashville State Technical Institute. Her work is widely published throughout the Southeast.

Fused Glass
During this class, we will make fused glass objects that will explore transparent, opaque and iridescent glasses. Techniques such as bas-relief, working with glass grits and creating designs with the sandblaster will be explored. Discussions about studio safety, equipment, glass types, and firing schedules will give you a strong foundation in fused glass. All levels.

is a fused glass artist living in Gatlinburg; BA in Art from University of Florida and fused glass training at Arrowmont; member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild for glass and the Foothills Craft Guild in glass and pottery.

Exploration of Woodturning
This is a basic introduction to the woodturning process, offering a good foundation to beginners and allowing more advanced students to hone their skills. Spindle, faceplate and dry wood bowl turning techniques will be covered in this fun and informative class. A variety of different projects will be accomplished such as creating a table lamp, cake stand, bowls and candlesticks. Learn about different tools and their uses as well as basic finishing techniques. All skill levels are welcome, but there will be an emphasis on the beginner.

Randy Ogle,
a native of Gatlinburg, is a third generation woodworker receiving training from his father and grandfather. He is owner of The Chair Shop in the Arts & Crafts Community of Gatlinburg; member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild.

Box It Up!
Ever wanted to get started in woodworking but didn’t know how? In this class, we will use the construction of a basic box to introduce fundamental woodworking techniques. Bring a small object to be contained, then along with the instructor, design and build a box to enclose the object. Basic design concepts, along with different types of joinery, doors, drawers and surface decoration will be covered. Beginners will gain an understanding and appreciation of wood while students with some experience will be able to explore more advanced methods. All levels.

Ted Lott
is anArrowmont artist-in-residence; received his BFA in Woodworking and Furniture Design from the Maine College of Art in 2006. He is a native of the Midwest, originally from Wisconsin.
